How To Diffuse Essential Oils
Up until 6 years ago, I didn’t even know what a diffuser was, let alone how to diffuse essential oils in one. We diffuse oils in our home all the time now. Here are some tips on how and why we diffuse essential oils.
Why Diffuse Essential Oils?
The artificial fragrances in candles, deodorants, dryer sheets, shampoos, lotions, and more are SO bad for our bodies! They contain chemicals that are endocrine disruptors and carcinogens. I don’t know about you, but I would rather not have my endocrine system disrupted.
Smelling clean and fresh is good, but it seems that companies have included more and more chemicals over the years. Now the smells in these products are interfering with our health.
Did you ever wonder why so many people have allergies, asthma, and other major issues at younger and younger ages?
Obviously, we love our scents though. The candle and perfume industries sell millions of dollars in products each year for a reason.
Essential oils provide a great alternative to the harmful scents and fragrances in the products we are using. Use a pure essential oil in a diffuser and you are not only protecting yourself, but you are actually benefiting your health for the good.

What Does “Diffuse” Mean?
If you take an essential oil bottle and shake some oil out of it, the oil falls to the ground quickly. Essential oil diffusers are devices that micronize the essential oils with water vapor and send those molecules into the air.
Then everyone in the room can enjoy the scent. Unless you buy essential oils that are not pure, you are improving the air quality in your home and benefiting your body too.
What are Diffusers?
Diffusers used with essential oils are ultrasonic. This just means that they use vibrations to vaporize essential oils. These small molecules get sent into the air with no heat, just a cool mist.
You don’t want to heat essential oils so using a cool mist diffuser is important.
How to Use a Diffuser:
To use a diffuser, you just add water according to manufacturer instructions. Then add 5-7 drops of Young Living essential oils and get the good scents going in your home. You can add more or less oil depending on your preference. Five to seven drops usually works really well though.
When you use cheap oils, you often have to use more essential oil than if you just start with pure oil in the first place.
1. Benefits of Diffusing Essential Oils
Odors – Essential oils in the air help all the air in the room smell better. Whether you burned dinner or just have smelly feet, diffusing oils can help.
Better Mood – Diffuse “happy” oils like any of the citrus essential oils (lemon, orange, tangerine, bergamot, grapefruit, lime) or blends like Joy, Stress Away, or Release. Essential oils can help encourage healthy emotions.
More Energy – Many essential oils are energizing. When you diffuse them into the air, everyone in the room experiences this energy boost. Some oils good for energy and motivation include Motivation, peppermint, En-R-Gee, Highest Potential, lemon, and others.
Concentration – Yes, there are even essential oils to use to help mental clarity and concentration. Oils to diffuse include lemon, peppermint, Highest Potential, Brain Power, and others.
Better Sleep – Many people diffuse oils at night to help them sleep better. They turn the diffuser on when they go to bed and let it run all night. For example, good oils to use to help encourage better sleep include lavender, Peace & Calming, Stress Away, cedarwood, valerian, and others.
Less Stress – Our days are often filled with stress but essential oils can help our bodies relax more and lessen the stress we are feeling. So some good oils to diffuse for stress include Stress Away, lavender, Joy, Peace & Calming, Grounding, and more.
Many people diffuse essential oils in their offices and classrooms during the day. Then those that don’t have that luxury can come home and fire up their diffuser so that everyone can feel relaxed and refreshed when they come home.
Overall Healthy Atmosphere – If you don’t have any major issues going on at home, it’s still a great idea to diffuse oils. This way you breathe in good scents and your body knows what to do with it and how to use it.

Better Breathing – Essential oils like Raven, RC, any of the eucalyptus oils, peppermint and others help to open up the sinuses and lungs. In addition, if you want to encourage good deep breathing, be sure to diffuse one of these oils in your home.
Immune Boosting – It’s important to have a healthy immune system and diffusing essential oils helps to create a healthy atmosphere. Essential oils like Thieves, peppermint, lavender, Purification are good immune building oils when diffused. Therefore, the great thing about knowing how to diffuse essential oils is that now everyone in the room can benefit from the healthy scent.
Some of our Favorite Oils to Diffuse Include:
- Thieves
- Lavender

- Joy

Essential oil scents can be relaxing, invigorating, mood boosting, calming, empowering, and motivating. In addition, they can also be balancing, increase spiritual awareness, dispel anger, release emotions from the past, support hormones, reduce airborne contaminants and much more.
Types of Diffusers
Ultrasonic – This is the main type of diffuser that most people use. You fill the well with water according to the manufacturer directions and add some essential oil and you’re ready to go. This disperses water vapor with essential oil in it into the air.
Nebulizer – This type of diffuser does not use water so you end up using more oil in some cases. It is used for more acute conditions that need more concentrated essential oils.
Nebulizers usually have a glass piece where the diffused oil comes out so it’s easier to break and doesn’t look as nice as some of the pretty ultrasonic diffusers. As a result, they still have their place when you are looking into how to diffuse essential oils and how to get the most amount of oils into the air.
2. How long should you diffuse?
When thinking about how to diffuse essential oils, people often wonder how long they should run their diffuser. Some people who don’t use pure oils say to run a diffuser for only 15-20 minutes at a time. But when you are using pure therapeutic grade essential oils, you can just let the diffuser run until it shuts off.
3. How to Get a Diffuser
I recommend Young Living diffusers because they work well and come with a 1-year warranty which is quite nice because sometimes diffusers don’t last very long. Any family can get an essential oil diffuser along with a kit of oils through my link at Young Living or you can get your own account and purchase wholesale with your own link.

6. Common Essential Oil Diffuser Questions:
How can I diffuse essential oils without a diffuser?
Although not as effective, you can put essential oils on a cotton ball or reed wood and allow the scent to float around the room.
Can I diffuse essential oils around my cat or dog?
Many people diffuse essential oils around their pets with no issues. Above all, make sure you are using pure therapeutic essential oils so your pets are not breathing in any chemicals or solvents that could harm them.
Can you diffuse essential oils in a cool mist humidifier?
A humidifier is not really the same as a diffuser. But if you really need to diffuse oils for a day and don’t have a micronizing diffuser, I don’t think it would hurt to use it.
Can you diffuse essential oils around babies?
Many parents diffuse essential oils around babies especially to help them sleep. Make sure you are using pure therapeutic essential oils though. Babies are too precious to risk having them breathe in something that is not pure oil and could have chemicals or solvents.
Can you diffuse essential oils while pregnant?
Many pregnant women diffuse essential oils. Above all, it’s best to diffuse only pure therapeutic grade oils to give her the best possible atmosphere and not risk breathing in chemicals or additives.
Can you diffuse essential oils all night?
Yes, many people diffuse essential oils at night to help them sleep better.
Can you diffuse essential oils in a humidifier? It’s not a good idea to heat essential oils so you would be better off diffusing your oils in a cool mist micronizing diffuser.
Can you diffuse essential oils all day? You should be able to. Running cycle in your diffuser is usually plenty for a day, but you can diffuse longer than that too. Most diffusers run anywhere from 4-10 hours on one cycle.
Can you diffuse essential oils in a wax warmer? Essential oils perform better if they are not heated. The discs that you use in wax warmers often contain chemicals that are endocrine disruptors and carcinogens, so it’s best to not use them at all and get a cool-mist diffuser instead.
In Conclusion:
I hope this post has helped you know how to diffuse essential oils. Hopefully, you feel better educated on what a diffuser is, how it is used, and which oils are best to use for your desired result.
